Denver is the natural starting point to visit the scenic and historic mountain states, filled with national parks, ancient Indian cliff dwellings and narrow gauge railroads.
Colorado Springs is the home of Pikes Peak, the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy as well as Garden of the Gods Park.
Seated on the high-desert mesa at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Taos is rich with art and steeped in history. Visit Taos Pueblo, an ancient living Indian village that has stood unchanged for centuries.
Santa Fe’s Old Town boasts almost 950 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Follow the famous Santa Fe Trail to Pecos National Historical Park. (B)

Visit Bandelier National Monument, stop at the Pueblo of Jemez, take a detour to Chaco Culture National Historical Park or visit Aztec Ruins.
Mesa Verde National Park offers a unique chance to walk in the footsteps of the vanished Anasazi civilisation. Travel through the Valley of the Gods, with huge isolated red sandstone rocks standing above the level valley floor. (B)
Continue to Monument Valley, one of the most remarkable landscapes in the world. The sparkling blue waters of Lake Powell are framed by towering rock formations and soaring red cliffs.
Visit the spectacular north rim of the Grand Canyon for breathtaking views. Continue to Kanab, known as ‘Little Hollywood’.
Zion National Park encompasses some of the most scenic canyon country in the United States. Explore the park as you travel towards Bryce Canyon, where erosion has shaped colourful Claron limestone, sandstone and mudstones into thousands of spires, fins, pinnacles and mazes. (B)
Drive along one of the most beautiful stretches of highway through one of America’s newest protected lands, the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Stop at the Anasazi Indian Village and explore Capitol Reef National Park on your way to Moab, mountain biking capital of the world. (B)
Arches National Park is famous for the red sandstone arches that occur there in great profusion. Canyonlands National Park covers a vast area of rock wilderness in south east Utah, centred on the confluence of the Green and Colorado rivers.
Visit the Colorado National Monument, an area of eroded red rock formations and canyons just south of the Colorado River near Grand Junction. Wind through the spectacular gorge created by the mighty Colorado River, home to many famous ski resorts.
Rocky Mountain National Park’s Trail Ridge Road is America’s highest continuously paved road. Check out Larimer Square, a restored section of Denver’s oldest street, with great restaurants and pubs, to bring this trip to a great ending.
