Day 1
Upon arrival into Kigali, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
Day 2
This morning drive to Akagera National Park arriving in time for lunch. After lunch, partake in an afternoon game drive looking for the area’s wildlife. Akagera National Park is a recent conservation success story with the reintroduction of lions and black rhino, meaning this park is now a big five reserve again and fast returning to its former glory. The strength of Akagera is its diversity of environments with open plains, woodlands, lakes and grassy low mountains to explore. (B)(L)(D)
Day 3
Today you have a morning and afternoon game drive with a boat ride on Lake Ihema offering a chance to see hippos, some very large crocodiles and some of the 550 bird species including unique and iconic species such as the shoebill. (B)(L)(D)
Day 4
This morning drive to Butare, stopping en route to visit the ancient palace of Mwami, a Rwandan King. Enjoy a leisurely lunch before continuing to Nyungwe National Park, believed to be one of Africa’s oldest forests. Sat in the southwest pocket of Rwanda, it is breathtakingly beautiful. This lush and vibrant green rainforest covers over 1000 square kilometres and its dense bamboo, grasslands, tea plantations, swamps, and bogs make the perfect home for a wide variety of wildlife. Besides being spectacularly beautiful, Nyungwe is a biodiversity hotspot with over 13 species of primate calling the park home. The water from this region goes on to feed both the Congo and Nile rivers. (B)(L)(D)
Day 5
Today you will spend the morning tracking chimpanzees, an exhilarating experience as family groups can be up to 60 strong and move fast through the canopy. Return to the lodge for lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure or you can choose to book a colobus monkey trek, canopy walk or bird walk (additional cost). (B)(L)(D)
Day 6
This morning is at leisure to soak up the serene forest environment before departing for Lake Kivu for the next two nights. Spend time relaxing on the shores of the lake which is surrounded by magnificent mountains and has deep emerald coloured waters. (B)(L)(D)
Day 7
Today is spent at leisure to enjoy the lake. Rwanda's western side is bounded by Lake Kivu, one of a string of huge freshwater lakes which lie along Africa's Great Rift Valley, Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s largest lake. Optional activities include kayaking, boat rides, nature walks, hot springs or simply relax and enjoy pristine beaches and some relaxation. (B)(L)(D)
Day 8
Early morning drive to Ruhengeri, the base for gorilla trekking at the Volcanoes National Park. You have will have a short briefing before setting out on foot in search of your assigned gorilla group. Once you have found the gorillas, you have an hour to observe their fascinating behaviour. Several habituated families live in the park, and the hiking can be strenuous, but what a reward you are met with; a wildlife experience that is truly unforgettable. (B)(L)(D)
Day 9
Enjoy your morning at leisure or go on an optional second gorilla trek or perhaps set out on a shorter hike to find the critically endangered golden monkey. (B)(L)(D)
Day 10
After breakfast transfer back to Kigali for onward arrangements. (B)
