Day 4

Greater Kruger National Park

Wake up early for your first morning game drive. The Greater Kruger area is one of the world’s best wilderness areas – and with good reason, it is home to 147 mammal species, including the prized ‘Big 5’ – lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and rhino. The park is home to the world’s largest population of white rhino, a critically endangered species. While seeing big game is always exhilarating, there are many other smaller species that are also captivating, and birding enthusiasts will be delighted at the approximately 350 species of bird recorded on the reserve.

Late afternoon provides another opportunity to head out on a game drive as the numerous nocturnal animals begin to awake from their afternoon slumber.  (B)(L)(D)

Day 8

Cape Town

Take a ferry to Robben Island and enjoy an informative guided excursion with a former political prisoner including a viewing of Nelson Mandela’s cell. For nearly 400 years, Robben Island, 12 kilometres from Cape Town, was a place of banishment, exile, isolation and imprisonment. It was here that rulers sent those they regarded as political troublemakers and social outcasts and the unwanted of society. During the apartheid years, Robben Island became internationally known for its institutional brutality. The duty of those who ran the Island and its prison was to isolate opponents of apartheid and to crush their morale. Some freedom fighters spent more than a quarter of a century in prison for their beliefs. Those imprisoned on the island succeeded on a psychological and political level in turning a prison ‘hell-hole’ into a symbol of freedom and personal liberation. Robben Island came to symbolise, not only for South Africa and the African continent, but also for the entire world, the triumph of the human spirit over enormous hardship and adversity. The rest of the day is at your leisure. (B)
