Upon arrival at Iquitos airport you'll be transferred to the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Iquitos where you will enjoy a delicious lunch before transferring to the port of Nauta. Board the M/V Zafiro and settle into your suite before setting sail on your Amazon adventure. The naturalist guides will provide an overview of the upcoming itinerary, including activities, routes and information about wildlife, before you enjoy a welcome dinner, sampling the Peruvian cuisine with an Amazon flare. Begin your day with a boating expedition on the Amazon River to discover the local flora and fauna. After breakfast, learn about the source of the Amazon River before heading out to see the confluence of the Ucayali and Marañón rivers. Walk to Puerto Prado to see the "Victoria Regias", the largest water lily in the world, and visit a market set up by local women from the community to sell their handmade crafts. After lunch visit Nauta Caño, where you'll see the “Forrest of Mirrors” a great place to spot toucans, parrots, macaws, iguanas, sloths and
monkeys. Before heading back on board, enjoy a nighttime outing in search of caimans, tarantulas and other species that make an appearance only after the sun goes down. (B)(L)(D)
This morning, try your hand at piranha fishing using local techniques on the Yanayacu de Pucate River. The afternoon begins with a talk about the philosophy of the Amazon, before taking a walk over hanging bridges to admire the riches of the rainforest from the treetops. Start the day with a picnic on the Samiria River, where you'll have a chance to kayak and swim in the black waters. Learn about the local way of life and ancestral traditions with a visit to the San Regis community. Relax and enjoy live music on board before the presentation by the crew and farewell dinner. Rise early this morning for a visit to the local market in Nauta, the second largest city in the region. Look for arapaima, the second-largest freshwater fish in the world, Arrau turtles, butterflies and different species of birds and fish at Sapi Sapi Lagoon. On the way to the airport, stop by the Amazon Rescue Center (CREA), where biologists and volunteers take care of manatees – an endangered species – rescued by the authorities. See how the manatees are cared for and prepped for reinsertion into their natural habitat. (B)
