Arrive at Dibrugarh or Jorhat airport and transfer to Dikhou Mukh to board the ship.
Walk through Sualkuchi, a bustling little town that is the centre of Assamese silk production. Witness the whole process of silk manufacturing, from cocoon, spinning and dyeing to hand-weaving into exquisite mekhela chadars (the traditional attire of Assamese women). We then sail to the Saraighat Bridge and tour Guwahati where we visit the Kamakhya Temple, known for its tantric rites and animal sacrifices.
Disembark this morning and transfer to Guwahati airport for final departure.
Travel by road to Sibsagar, the one-time capital of the Ahom kings of Assam, who ruled for 700 years until the 1820s. Their culture and architecture is a delightful amalgam of India and Southeast Asia, noticeable in the stupa-like profiles of the temples. Enjoy lunch at a local tea estate before returning to the ship and continue downstream to Majuli Island, one of the world’s largest river islands.
Majuli Island represents a unique microcosm of Assamese culture, where locals are followers of neo-Vaishnavism. The elegant island satras showcase a unique way of life where the faithful live simply, offering worship through gayan-bayan (songs and musical instruments) and readings. Visit Auniati Monastery and its eclectic museum and later attend a dance performance at Kamalabari monastery.
Relax as we float downstream to a local tribal village. By afternoon, UNESCO listed World Heritage site of Kaziranga National Park will be on our left, keep an eye out for elephants.
This morning we arrive at the town of Vishnath, known for its fine Ahom-period temple. Our voyage continues to a delightful mooring at Silghat, with butterflies abounding in the surrounding jungle. This afternoon embark on your first jeep safari through the Western Range of Kaziranga National Park.
Today we enjoy a morning and afternoon jeep safari. Covering an area of 430 square kilometres, Kaziranga National Park is home to the world’s largest population of the Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros and Indian Wild Water Buffalo. The park also has the highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers, with one for every five square kilometres. The swamps and thickets of elephant grass support large populations of Indian elephants, swamp deer and Capped Langurs. The park is also a birding paradise; the Oriental Honey Buzzard, Black-shouldered Kite, White-tailed Eagle and Himalayan Griffon are all found here.
Cruise downstream to dock at Tezpur. After lunch, we visit the remains of the 6th Century Da Parbatia Temple with its exquisitely carved portal. Cycle rickshaws take us through the local bazaars to Cole Park with its collection of medieval stone carvings. We moor for the night near the isolated Singri Hill.
Spend the day on the river, traversing a lunar landscape of sand islands before closing in on the range of hills beyond which lies Guwahati. Moor for the night not far from Ganesh Pahar.
We reach Guwahati by midday and climb up to the Aswaklanta Temple before driving out to the temple ruins of Madan Kamdev, famous for erotic carvings reflective of the tantric traditions of the area. Return to the ship and cruise downstream to Sualkuchi.
