Arrive in China’s capital of Beijing and transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at your leisure to explore the city or relax at your hotel.
This morning begin your tour of China’s great capital. See the vast expanse of Tiananmen Square and enter the imposing Forbidden City, with its remarkable palaces, temples and royal enclosures. The vast Forbidden City was constructed in the early 15th century and the complex consists of 980 buidlings. Explore the Temple of Heaven and its popular park where artists and musicians gather. Enjoy a full-day excursion to the Great Wall. We travel to Mutianyu, a picturesque section of the wall that is beyond the city outskirts. Ascend by ropeway for a walk along this remarkable structure, taking in the size and scope of the wall. After your exploration and lunch nearby, head back to Beijing for a free evening. (B)(L)
Take a morning bullet train to the ancient city of Xi’an. On arrival in Xi’an in early afternoon, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. After checking in, depart for the Shaanxi Provincial Museum, with one of the most important collections of Han and Tang Dynasty art. Visit the imposing old city walls, dating back to the 15th century, before finishing with a walk through the Muslim Quarter. This area is home to the city’s most interesting streets with a vast array of shops and stalls whose products include some of the city’s famous snack foods - flat breads, grilled meats, and noodle soups. Travel outside the city visit Xi’an’s most famous site, the Terracotta Warriors Museum. Comprising over 8,000 warriors along with additional horses and chariots - each figure is uniquely crafted. The figures were created for and buried with China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang who died in 210 BC. It is thought that over 700,000 workers contributed to the project. Continue to the neolithic village of Banpo. (B)(L)
Fly to the ultra-modern city of Shanghai. Shanghai is China’s largest city with a population of over 24 million and the financial hub of the country. (B)
Start the day at the Bund, with its famous promenade along the Huang Pu River. Here, see the city’s 1930s colonial architecture facing the 21st century towers of modern Pudong opposite. Drive to the Yu Gardens and walk through these charming classical Chinese gardens, before visiting the former French Concession, where colonial architecture is now home to cafes, boutiques, bars and other outlets. Finish your city tour at the Jade Buddha Temple, featuring a famous Burmese Buddha image. (B)(L)
