Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel where you will spend the next three nights. The remainder of the day is at leisure to explore this exhilarating city. With its golden beaches, lush tropical rainforest and dramatic mountain peaks, Rio de Janeiro is one of the most spectacular cities in the world. Immerse yourself in the rhythm of this vibrant city, and feel the pulse of the local people, known as Cariocas, on the beaches and nightlife of Copacabana.
Explore Rio’s wonders in an open-air jeep and immerse yourself in this magnificent city. Discover Tijuca Forest, known as the world’s largest urban forest, with its mix of nature and history, and stop at the Chinese Vista for spectacular views of Ipanema and Copacabana beaches. Ride to the top of the beautiful Corcovado Mountain, where the statue of Christ the Redeemer sits. The statue was recently named one of the seven "New Wonders of the World". Enjoy stunning panoramic views of the city and beaches before heading back down the mountain for lunch.
After lunch, continue to the world famous Sugar Loaf Mountain in the middle of the Guanabara Bay. Rising up from a small peninsula at the entrance of the bay, its name is said to refer to its resemblance to the traditional shape of a sugar loaf. Take two cable cars to the top, where you’ll enjoy one of the most breathtaking views of the city. The final stop of your tour is a visit to the Botanical Gardens. With more than 6,000 different species of tropical and subtropical plants and trees, the variety of species is astounding and includes the Imperial Palm tree, giant water lilies and the famous Victoria-Regia. Stroll along the pathways of the park and listen for the sounds of native birds including curios and sabias. (B)(L)
Today is yours to spend discovering Rio de Janeiro at your leisure. Perhaps join an optional cooking class to discover the mysteries of Brazilian cuisine, an art and graffiti tour tracing the route of open-air artwork in some of Rio’s oldest neighbourhoods, explore the charming and historic neighbourhood of Santa Teresa or visit a samba school to celebrate the samba spirit and learn about the history of samba and the world famous Carnival Parade. Transfer to the airport for your flight to Iguazu Falls where you will stay for the next two nights.
Comprising more than 275 waterfalls, stretching over three kilometres across and towering 100 metres high, Iguazu Falls is one of the great natural wonders of the world. Meeting at the borders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay the falls are enclosed by Iguazu Falls National Park which covers a large area of tropical rainforest and is home to some of South America’s most iconic wildlife. This afternoon you'll have the opportunity to see Brazilian side of the falls on a walking tour. Follow the extensive walkways to different viewpoints for amazing panoramic views of more than 240 waterfalls, and board the glass elevator to a platform for more spectacular views and photo opportunities of these majestic waterfalls. Today you will have the opportunity to visit the Argentine side of the falls located within Iguazu National Park. Upon arrival you’ll head to Estacion Central to board the train to Devil’s Throat station. Walk to the highest point of the falls among an abundance of nature; in this section of the rainforest you'll witness the diversity of native species the National Park has to offer, including a huge variety of ferns, orchids, begonias, birds and butterflies. The highlight is a visit to the top of the biggest waterfall, spectacular Devil’s Throat. From the lookout platform perched right above, marvel at the power and beauty of this magnificent waterfall. Fly to Manaus in the heart of the Amazon. 60% of the Amazon lies within the borders of Brazil and it is the most well-known place for visiting this vast wilderness. Transfer to your hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day to explore the city. (B)
This morning you will be transfer by car and boat to your jungle lodge in the heart of the Amazon. Enjoy a presentation about the lodge before boarding a boat and setting sail down the Negro River. Enjoy views of the Amazonas Theatre, the Port of Manaus and interesting aspects of the local life such as the stilt houses. Manaus is where the river is at its widest and offers the opportunity to witness the ‘Meeting of the Waters’ - a spectacular sight where the sandy water of the Rio Solimões meets the black water of the Rio Negro, forming the Amazon River, and the different coloured waters run side-by-side without mixing. After enjoying a delicious dinner at the lodge embark on a unique canoe adventure deep within the Amazon jungle in search of alligators which are also known as “caimans” by the locals. (B)(L)(D)
Spend time getting better acquainted with the Amazon during one of the many activities on offer at the lodge. Learn about the biodiversity of the local flora and fauna on a nature hike. Search for wildlife such as monkeys, reptiles and a variety of birdlife, as the specialist guides teach you about the animals, medicinal plants of the jungle and where to find edible fruits and drinking water. Visit a riverside community to learn more about the culture of the local indigenous people. (B)(L)(D)
Enjoy another day of excursions exploring the surrounding rainforest. Visit the Monkey Forest rehabilitation centre to learn about the work they do rescuing animals from illegal trade, or try your hand at fishing for piranhas and other species. In the evening, appreciate the sounds of the jungle at night on a night canoe tour in search for caiman and other nocturnal creatures. (B)(L)(D)
Depart the lodge this morning to return to Manaus. Fly to Salvador where you will spend the next two nights in a traditional Pousada. A Pousada is an exclusive and often historic boutique hotel which provides an insight to the place, people and culture of the area. The former colonial capital of Brazil, Salvador is a unique blend of magnificent history, striking colonial architecture and African culture. Considered the country’s soul and the birthplace of Brazilian culture, the local cuisine, music, dance and vibrant visual arts are all testaments to the pervasive African influence, and the streets are filled with dance and music all year round. As one of Brazil’s great historical destinations, the city is filled with churches, homes and forts that reflect stunning Portuguese architecture from the Baroque period. (B)
Discover Salvador on a walking excursion. This tour introduces you to Salvador, showing how the city has changed throughout the ages to become the Salvador of today. Starting out along the bay, you’ll work your way through Salvador’s tree-lined streets up to renowned Pelourinho neighbourhood, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and where you can find the largest assemblage of colonial buildings in Latin America. Stop off at the Sao Francisco Church, with its extravagant gold leaf baroque designs, before heading towards the heart of the historic district, Largo do Pelourinho, famous for its colourful colonial buildings. You will be given free time to enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants where you will be able to taste some of the best Bahian cuisine. (B)
