If your ideal holiday includes art, culture, food and fun, you should definitely pack your bag for the Lone Star State. There’s no place like Texas. You've come to the right place if you're wanting to get in touch with your inner cowboy. The Lone Star State
offers some of the most unique experiences in the USA and, with access to Texas now so easy from Australia and New Zealand, a whole new world of food, culture and music has opened up for those looking for a fun, authentic experience.
FEEL THE BEAT
Texas has some of the world’s largest and most modern music arenas as well as the coolest hole-in-the-wall venues. Some are gorgeous and refined, while others have tiny plywood stages and a mechanical bull on the dancefloor. Every night you’ll find passionate musicians and music-lovers crammed into every dancehall, nightclub, festival and lounge across the state. The city of Austin, in the heart of the state, is the live music capital of the world. Along with 250 venues pumping out rock, jazz, blues, hip hop
and everything in between, the city is home to the world-renowned South by Southwest and Austin City Limits Music Festivals.
ART AND CULTURE
Despite the cowboy image, Texas also has an air of sophistication. For every cowboy, there’s an art aficionado to match (who knows, they may even be one and the same). Dallas
is home to the largest urban arts district in the USA and Texas is also famous for having some of the most comprehensive collections of Latin American art. The spectacular Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth houses one of USA’s largest collections of post-World War II art.
A PLACE FOR COWBOYS
Best known as the city of cowboys and culture, Fort Worth
offers some incredible western experiences. Each week the city hosts the Stockyards Championship Rodeo, where professional cowboys and cowgirls compete in events including bull riding, barrel racing, calf roping and more. You can’t afford to miss Pawnee Bill’s Wild West Show, a historic re-enactment of the famous show that toured the country almost a century ago. Fort Worth is also home to the world’s only daily cattle drive, where Texas Longhorns are driven down East Exchange Avenue by genuine Texas cowhands. At night, head to Billy Bob’s, the world’s largest honky-tonk. At this huge 18,000 square metre dance hall in the Stockyards National Historic District, you can have a great time channelling your inner cowboy.
STATE ON A PLATE
For many of us, local food is why we visit a place and, in Texas, food is more than fuel – it’s a way of life. From five-star restaurants and renowned chefs to quirky undiscovered food joints that are manned by tomorrow’s culinary superstars, there’s something for everyone. Tuck into award-winning BBQ
with some of the juiciest, most flavoursome meat in the world. Order up big on Tex-Mex. Whether your tastes run to outstanding seafood or the best chilli to ever grace a bowl, grab your fork and head to Texas. It’s also the place for excellent craft breweries – they’re dotted right across the state – and boasts more than 350 wineries.
