. During their trip, the group was lucky enough to experience the iconic Rocky Mountaineer, travelling in luxurious GoldLeaf Service. We asked Belinda to fill us in on her magical experience to help those considering embarking on a Rocky Mountaineer train journey.
What is the Rocky Mountaineer?
Rocky Mountaineer is a Canadian rail-tour company that offers Western Canadian holiday packages incorporating a breathtaking train ride on one of four rail routes through British Columbia, Alberta and the US state of Washington. Routes include the Coastal Passage, Rainforest to Gold Rush, Journey through the Clouds, and the First Passage to the West.
How does it work – can you get on and off where you please?
Guests will be onboard the train all day with designated stops along the routes. Stops vary depending on which route you choose, but include Kamloops, Lake Louise, Banff, Jasper, Whistler and Quesnel.
Do you sleep on the train?
No, the trips are daylight rail tours through the Canadian Rockies which shows off all the amazing scenery. After a day onboard the train through the Rockies, evenings are spent in comfortable hotel accommodation.
What’s the inside of the train like?
Guests in GoldLeaf Service travel in a bi-level dome coach. In the upper level, panoramic views are enjoyed through fully domed windows while gourmet regional cuisine is served in the exclusive dining room lined with large picture windows on the lower level.
Those travelling in SilverLeaf Service will experience a custom-designed single-level domed coach with oversized domed windows. Guests enjoy delicious hot meals served to them in the comfort of their seats, ensuring they don’t miss even a glimpse of the incredible Rocky Mountains.
How is the food and how do meals work?
As part of its rail travel package, Rocky Mountaineer serves hot, gourmet breakfast and lunches with snacks and complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages while onboard.
What’s it like for solo travellers?
Single travellers have access to great Go Solo specials, enabling them to pay the per person double occupancy rate as a solo adventurer. There is a real mixture of couples, family and solo travellers on board, so there are always plenty of opportunities to make friends or enjoy the views in solitude.
What’s an average day like?
Imagine travelling 280 miles every day – all in daylight – while viewing some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world.
What are the highlights?
Travelling through areas simply not accessible by foot, car or coach; viewing rushing rivers; passing beside towering waterfalls and riding through spectacular river canyons.
When is the best time to go?
Flora, fauna and wildlife are all beginning to emerge in April and May, during which waterways will be rushing and there’s often still snow on the mountain peaks. In May and June, the cruising season begins so you can easily match up a cruise with your rail journey. July and August are prime summer months, which is also the best time to view florals and Western maple trees. In September you can see snow-capped peaks and the salmon run, which attracts hungry bears and eagles.
What are the costs like?
