More about the Calgary Stampede...

Saddle up for the 2012 Calgary Stampede.

It’s time to dust off the cowboy boots, sort out the denim and giddyup for the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. Next year’s Calgary Stampede will be held from July 7-16 and country and western lovers from around the world will throng into Calgary to witness the myriad of events, including calf roping, steer wrestling, bull riding, barrel racing, saddle bronc and bareback riding.

The ten day festival kicks off with a parade through the streets of downtown Calgary and includes the world’s largest rodeo, carrying prize money of $CAD1 million, chuckwagon racing and First National exhibitions. The Stampede is also accompanied by a huge funfair and music events. Country and western superstar, Kenny Chesney, has already thrown his hat in the ring for this year’s festival.

The fastest rodeo event is steer wrestling which involves impeccable timing, co ordination and strength. The hazer – the cowboy on horseback racing along the steer wrestler - is also very important as their job is to keep the steer running straight.

And if you plan to attend the rodeo, it’s important to dress the part. You won’t want to come across as an out of place city slicker, as people in Calgary do indeed dress Western most of the year.

Here are some things to know before you go:

• Its best-known attraction is the World Championship of Chuck Wagon Racing, an amazing contest of nerves and horsepower.

• Each afternoon, for three action-packed hours, the rough and rugged skills of the world’s top professional cowboys present a world-class showcase of saddlebronc and bareback riding, calf roping, and steer wrestling. This fantastic rodeo is a never-to-be-forgotten thrill of a lifetime.

• Each evening, nine heart-stopping chuck wagon races explode in an all-out dash to the finish – a challenge that ignites thousands of excited fans.

• As the sun goes down, the Stampede prepares for yet another kind of action. Immediately following the chuck wagon races, hundreds of singers, dancers and musicians take over the gigantic stage for a high-powered entertainment extravaganza. A brilliant finale of fireworks completes each day at “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.
