Headwater: Ancient & Classical Turkey Walk

Itinerary

• Day 1-3: Istanbul

  Spend two incredible days exploring this magical city – the Blue Mosque and 1500 year old St Sophia church. Be led through the avenues of bales of silk, gold trinkets and colourful spices of the Grand Bazaar. Visit Topkapi Palace, take a cruise on the Bosphorus, lined with imposing 19th century summer palaces and admire the late Byzantine frescoes at Kariye church.

• Day 4-6: Gallipoli – Pergamon

  Take a ferry across the Marmara Sea and along the Dardanelle straight. Walk a coastal path overlooking the Gallipoli Peninsula, site of the famous WW1 battle. Continue on to Troy and after visiting the site move on to Assos, where you will ascend through olive and pistachio trees to reach the ancient citadel with its theatre, gymnasium and bathhouse. Then an ancient paved way affords stunning views over the remains of Assos’ Greco-Roman harbour. In Pergamon, visit the ancient library and theatre, enjoying sweeping valley views as you reach the cobbled streets of the modern town.

• Day 7-8: Sardis – Ephesus

  Visit the imposing site of Sardis, and then descend along a panoramic forest trail to the village of Bozdag, and on to Selcuk, your base for two nights. Nearby is Ephesus, whose marbled streets reveal agorae, bathhouses, a theatre and the famed Library of Celsius. Also visit the white-washed village of Sirince.

• Day 9-11: Loutro – Hania

  Visit Didyma’s Temple of Apollo before arrival at Lake Bafa. Walk a windy trail through the semi-ruined Greek city of Herakleia, towards coastal Bodrum. In Bodrum, explore cobbled backstreets, revealing a Greek theatre, city gate and the famous Mausoluem.
