Karen Hill Tribe Trek & Retreat

Once a semi-nomadic tribe, the Karen people have now settled in the mountains north of Chiang Mai, between 800 and 1,800 metres, and developed fascinating ways of living in harmony with nature.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Chiang Mai – Karen Hill Tribe Lodge

Head north from Chiang Mai, deep in the heart of the mountains. En-route through beautiful mountain scenery, visit a local Thai market and Baan Chan Temple, and enjoy lunch at a natural pine forest. Head into the mountains with 4x4 over narrow roads to the unique Karen Hill Tribe Lodge. After a welcome drink from the Karen villagers you can relax at the lodge or take the opportunity to explore the surrounding hill tribe village. After a delicious dinner enjoy chatting around the camp fire until you retire to the comfort of your room. L D.

  • Day 2: Karen Hill Tribe Lodge

Explore the village to see hill tribe daily activities, then take a short trek to the elephant camp to ride high on the elephants back before stopping to enjoy a ‘jungle’ lunch. Continue to a Lisu hill tribe village and the Royal Project where non-indigenous fruit and vegetables are grown. Then visit the hill tribe school to see how students are taught. Return to the lodge to enjoy an afternoon of optional activities such as fishing, cooking, and photography or alternatively just relax amongst the surrounding rice fields. After dinner, join in the fun with a Karen cultural dance. B, L, D.

  • Day 3: Karen Hill Tribe Lodge – Chiang Mai

Take an early morning walk to the reservation area for bird watching and gibbon spotting, head back to the lodge for breakfast. After breakfast observe hill tribe women weaving traditional cotton cloth and pounding rice. Time to head back to Chiang Mai via Thailand's largest geyser – a hot spring. After lunch, continue along mountain scenery to visit Mok Fha waterfall where you can swim in the natural surroundings before arrival into Chiang Mai around 4.30pm. B, L.
