G Adventures: Discover Cambodia

Ideal for the traveller who is short on time but wants to experience Cambodia’s highlights. Gap Adventures guide will help you discover Phnom Penh’s markets, shrines and temples—and the horrors of the Killing Fields. In Siem Reap, we’ll devote plenty of time to the wonders of the Khmer Empire at Angkor Wat.

Itinerary

Witness crumbling temples and monuments cloaked in vines as you explore this massive complex of ruins. From the glories of the ancient past to the upheavals of recent times, this week-long journey will introduce you to Cambodia's rich history.

  • Day 1: Arrive Bangkok

Arrive Bangkok at any time today. Check the notice board at the hotel to see what time your group meeting is for this evening. Following the meeting, where you will meet your Chief Experience Officer (CEO) and fellow travelling companions, there will be an optional group dinner where you can sample loads of delicious Thai foods!

  • Days 2-4: Siem Reap (3B)

Early in the morning we cross into Cambodia by road to Siem Reap, which is our base for exploring Angkor. It will take approx 4 hours for the Bangkok to Ayranaprathat (border). It is possible to get Cambodian visas at the border; ask your CEO for details. Then, we will disembark with our luggage and cross the border by foot. This process can take up to an hour. After the border formalities are complete, we continue to Siem Reap. This section of the drive is approx. 3-4 hours. The scenery is spectacular and the contrast between Thailand and Cambodia is immediate. Siem Reap is a small, relaxed town of cafes and markets. Angkor, the former capital of the Khmer kingdom, is one of the wonders of the archeological world. Rediscovered at the end of the last century by French explorers, this vast ruined city is becoming one of the most popular sites in Southeast Asia. Visit some of the highlights of this ancient capital, like the magnificent temple of Angkor Wat(for sunrise), the enigmatic Bayon within the walled city of Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm, also known as the 'Tomb Raider Temple', and Preah Khan.

  • Days 5-6: Phnom Penh (2B)

This morning we travel by private bus to Phnom Penh, taking in points of interest along the way (5-6 hours). While in Phnom Penh we will witness the darker side of Cambodian history with visits to Choeng Ek, the site of the infamous Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng prison, the notorious Khmer Rouge prison where thousands of Cambodians perished. Other options include taking a look at the city with visits to the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda or the National Museum. The huge Russian Market is packed with souvenirs and all the necessities of daily life. Late afternoon is a great time to visit Wat Phnom where the sanctuary for which the city is named once stood. It is a Buddhist shrine, although a Taoist goddess resides here. Numerous monkeys dwell here, also, and it is one of the pleasure spots for residents of the city. A drink in one of the many riverside café’s watching the sunset is a fitting finale to the day.

  • Day 7: Depart Bangkok (B)

This morning we fly back to Bangkok where our tour will end at around midday. If you are booking onward travel today we recommend you do not book any flights prior to 3pm.
