For those who wish to get out and explore the real Cambodia and what it has to offer, this itinerary displays a wonderful balance of temple touring at Angkor, Phnom Penh’s most important monuments, and life out of the cities, visiting cultural villages, staying on an island in the Mekong, and finishing up with a couple of days of relaxation at Cambodia’s favourite beach spot.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Siem Reap

    After arrival and check in at your hotel get a first glimpse of Angkor at the early temples of the Roluos Group. Explore the beautiful surrounding countryside on a ride in a traditional cow cart, and then Buddhist monks will celebrate a private blessing ceremony for you!

  • Day 2: Siem Reap

    After breakfast, visit the ancient city of Angkor Thom. Get up close with an elephant as you ride on its back through the ancient South Gate and to the Bayon Temple. The Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King are also must-visits. Spend the early afternoon exploring Siem Reap’s colourful markets, and then end your day with a tour to the temples of the Small Circuit by local tuk tuk. B

  • Day 3: Siem Reap

    Start early to catch the sunrise at Angkor Wat. After a breakfast at Angkor Café, explore the famous monument in depth. Then, travel to the countryside to the pretty temple of Banteay Srey. Continue north to Kbal Spean, one of the earliest Hindu pilgrimage sites in Cambodia. A short 3 km trek up the hill will reward you with excellent views. On the way back to Siem Reap, stop at the Landmine Museum which promotes mine awareness. B, L

  • Day 4: Siem Reap – Battambang

    After an early breakfast, embark on a private boat that will take you on a fascinating journey across Tonlé Sap Lake to Battambang. In the afternoon, explore some of the many cultural villages around Battambang. Tonight, a special visit awaits you at Phare Ponleu Selpak - School of Music, Visual & Performing. A visit to one of their circus shows will leave you with a lasting memory. B, L, D.

  • Day 5: Battambang – Phnom Penh

    After breakfast, head to the Bamboo Train, set up by the villagers in order to facilitate the transportation of goods and persons. Sitting on the platform, you will travel the 8km to the next station through beautiful landscape and rice paddies. In the afternoon, journey overland to Phnom Penh and in the evening be treated to a delicious Khmer welcome dinner at Romdeng, a lovely charity restaurant. B, D.

  • Day 6: Phnom Penh

    Visit Phnom Penh by Cyclo, to the Royal Palace and Wat Phnom, the birthplace of the city, located on a small hilltop of Phnom Penh. In the afternoon, gain insight into Cambodia’s recent dark history on a visit to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. End the day at Russian Market, where you will have ample opportunity to shop for some souvenirs. (B)

  • Day 7: Cambodia Countryside

    Have a vehicle and guide at your disposal in order to embark on one of a range of activities including rice planting and harvesting (seasonal), a visit to the silver carving, lacquering and gilding workshops at Kompong Luong Village, a local village visit, a visit to a pagoda where you will receive a monk’s blessing, a visit a fortune teller or a boat cruise on the Mekong river.   • Day 8: Cambodia Phnom Penh – Kratie

    Drive five hours to Kratie, where you will check into the hotel on Koh Trong Island. Upon arrival, you can choose to take a local horse cart or pedal yourself around the island on a bicycle. Your first destination is the island’s Wat, where you can participate in a special tree planting project. Continue on to taste local fruit and visit a Vietnamese floating village. B.

  • Day 9: Kratie – Phnom Penh

    Drive north along the banks of the Mekong to the village of Kampi – one of the best places to view the rare Irrawaddy Dolphins. Get on board a local boat that will take you to the preferred habitats of these interesting creatures and you will follow the dolphins silently. Afterwards head south, on the way stopping at Chhlong, a tiny town with many French colonial houses. Upon arrival in Kampong Cham a delicious lunch will be served followed by a short tour of the provincial capital and its typical market, before continuing to Phnom Penh. B, L

  • Day 10: Phnom Penh – Sihanoukville

    After breakfast transfer to the beach resort of Sihanoukville arriving around midday. The rest of the day is at leisure. B

  • Day 11: Sihanoukville

    Enjoy the day at leisure to explore the area or relax by the beach. B

  • Day 12: Sihanoukville – Phnom Penh

    A relaxing morning before departure back to Phnom Penh where your tour ends. B
