G Adventures: The Voodoo Trail

Go where few travellers venture, following the Voodoo trail through the villages and towns of West Africa. Hike through forests and mountains, meet African royalty, and witness dances, trances and possession as you trace the origins of Africa’s mystical animist religions.

Itinerary

  • Day 1-3: Lome – Ganvié

Explore Togo’s vibrant capital, then travel to Kpalime and a local guest house in the forest. Join a local Voodoo ceremony as dancers fall into a deep trance as their bodies are possessed by spirits. Cross the border to Benin and the stilt village of Ganvié.

  • Day 4-6: Ganvié – Taneka

Cross Lake Nokwe to Portuguese-influenced Porto-Novo, capital of Benin. Journey to the Yoruba Kingdom of Ketou, hopefully to meet His Majesty the Oba (king). Witness the traditional Dancing Masks of Egun, and the fantastic World Heritage listed Royal Palace of Abomey.

  • Day 7-8: Taneka – Atakora

Hike Taneka Mountain to the ancient villages of the Yom. Meet nomads in their encampment, and the fortified dwellings of the Tamberma.

  • Day 9-12: Atakora – Gaoua

Visit traditional villages of the Moba with their round clay homes, and the Gurunsi of Burkina Faso, with colourful fortified houses. Learn how they live while on a local homestay, and sleep on the roof in tents. Head west to the fortified villages of the Dagarti. Camp under the stars, and visit the shy, traditional Lobi people of Burkina, and their unique fortified dwellings.

  • Day 13: Gaoua – Banfora

Travel to Loropeni, recently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, inhabited by the Guen people. Here you’ll be welcomed personally by the village king. Visit the village of Senoufo before continuing to the lively town of Banfora.

  • Day 14-16: Banfora – Ouagadougou

Explore the town of Bobo, including the “domes” of Fabedougou and the waterfalls of Kerfiughela. Continue to Ouagadougou, capital of Burkina Faso, and witness a Bwa ceremonial dance. After a final group night out, it’s time for your tour to end.
