Itinerary

  • During your 2-week stay with us, you’ll hike in the stunning Drakensberg Mountains and spend time exploring the Royal Natal National Park (a UNESCO heritage site). You’ll visit traditional Zulu villages – seemingly unchanged for centuries – and witness history being brought back to life at the C19 battlefields between Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. After tracing Churchill’s footsteps on Spion Kop, it’s off to the white sand beaches of the Indian Ocean where your tour ends with a private game safari. You are accompanied throughout by expert local hiking guide, David Sclanders, however we’ve also included (where appropriate) the services of professional battlefield guides/ safari rangers, to ensure that you really get the most out of your time here.

  • Day 1-3: Durban – Champagne Castle

Drive from Durban to Champagne Castle. On walks you’ll see 1,000 year old rock paintings, wildlife, duikers, and giant red rock cliffs. After a day’s walking, enjoy a swim at your hotel, or a drink looking out to the mountains.

  • Day 4-7: Champagne Castle – Royal Natal National Park

Drive north to Cathedral Peak, where the high grassland is splashed with protea and fairy bell flowers. Continue to Royal Natal National Park, with walks to the spectacular Ampitheatre. Wildlife includes the bluebilled firefinch, baboons, and bushbuck. The walking and views are spectacular, and the four-course dinner delicious.

  • Day 8-9: Royal Natal National Park – Isandlwana

Walk in the footsteps of Winston Churchill on a guided tour of Spion Kop, with its dramatic Boer War history. Visit Isandlwana Hill, site of a Zulu victory over the British in 1879, and walk in the ox cart tracks of Rorke’s Drift.

  • Day 10-11: Isandlwana – Hluhluwe

Drive down to the Elephant Coast, big game country. Walk with a ranger to view white rhino, and enjoy game drives and luxury tented accommodation in Hluhluwe Game Park as you search for the Big Five.

  • Day 12-13: St Lucia Wetlands – Durban

Your final walking explores the coastal wetlands, habitat of hippo and kingfishers, until reaching a perfect white sand beach on the Indian Ocean. Enjoy a final dinner after this exhiliarating holiday, before being transferred back to Durban.
