Carthgate to Cairo

Explore the varying cultures and historic sites of three very distinct North African countries as you travel from Tunisia to Libya and Egypt. You’ll discover ancient Phoenician trading ports, Greek temples, Roman cities, fortified Berber villages, reminders of the Second World War at Tobruk and El Alamein, and the magnificent Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza. This tour includes easy walking around sites, but also involves some long driving days.

Itinerary

  • Day 1-8: Tunisa – Tataouine

    Beginning in the bustling capital of Tunisia, visit the ancient seaport of Carthage then head inland for the Roman cities of Dougga, Sbeitia, and Bulla Regia with its underground villas and exquisite mosaics. Visit Kairouan, Tunisia’s holiest city, and spend the night in a Troglodyte cave at Matmata. Explore the hill-crest villages of Tataouine, where Berber tribes fortified their villages against attackers.

  • Day 9-16: Tripoli – Mersa Matruh

    Cross the border into Libya, visiting the Phoenician trading port of Sabratha en route to Tripoli. Visit the excellent museum. Soak up the atmosphere at the amazing ruined city of Leptis Magna, founded by the Phoenicians 3,000 years ago and embellished by the Romans. Travel to the “Green Mountains” to visit Ptolemais and the mosaics of Qasr Libya, and wander around the fantastic Greek temples around Susa at Cyrene and Apollonia.  Visit the WWII cemeteries at Tobruk before crossing the border into Egypt.

  • Day 17-21: Alexandria – Cairo

    Stop at the poignant battlefields of El Alamein, where 11,000 men lie buried, en route to Alexandria. Tour Alexandria before visiting the Coptic churches of Wadi Natrun en route to Cairo. Your journey in Egypt’s capital, exploring the excellent Egyptian Museum and the mighty pyramids and Sphinx on the Giza plateau.
