Dragoman: Libyan & Egyptian Explorer

This fascinating journey takes you way off the beaten track for desert exploration and great cultural experiences. This part of North Africa is bursting at the seams with history: the Egyptians, Romans and Arabs have all left their mark on the region. Beginning in Egypt, you will gain a great insight into the cosmopolitan lifestyle of Cairo and Alexandria - a stark contrast to the Nomadic lifestyle you will envisage on your classic overland experience deep into the desert of Libya.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Cairo

Arrive in Egypt’s chaotic capital and head for a guided tour of some of the most iconic sights in the world. The Pyramids of Giza and Saqqara Cemetery are unforgettable archaeological gems.

  • Day 2-3: Alexandria

Spend time soaking up the coastal charm of Alexandria, situated 300km from Cairo.

  • Day 4-5: Siwa

Relax in the lush surrounds of Siwa, located in the heart of the Western Desert - this is one of the most isolated towns in the world, and one of the most beautiful landscapes in Egypt. Included is a visit to the battleground El Alamein.

  • Day 6: Bush Camp

Journey through the desert to the Libyan border, and camp under a starry night sky en-route.

  • Day 7-8: Shahat

Visit the ancient ruins of Cyrene and Apollonia. With the help of a guide, explore the temples, palaces and baths of these sites.

  • Day 9-10: Bush Camp

Journey 900km over two days, heading south via Sirt and Waddan Oasis, wild camping along the way.

  • Day 11-15: Sebha - Tekerkiba/Desert Camp

Relax in the city of Sebha in preparation for your desert adventure. You will then embark on an epic journey through the desert in 4x4s on a three-night guided desert exploration to the mountains and rock art of Jebel Akakus, and the stunning oasis lakes of the Urbai Sand Sea.

  • Day 16-18: Al-ghariyat - Ghadames

Journey 475km for Al-ghariyat, wildcamping en-route to Ghadames. Walk through the old city of Ghadames and admire mosques, gardens and covered alleyways. A visit to a museum reveals how the people of Ghadames once lived.

  • Day 19: Leptis Magna

Behold the wonder of Leptis Magna, a true highlight of Libya. These well preserved Roman ruins feature a basilica, market place, amphitheatre and arena. The Hadrianic Baths are especially impressive.

  • Day 20-21: Tripoli

Travel to the capital of Libya and visit the ancient ruins of Sabratha, home to impressive mosaics and stunning coastal views. In free time, relax in the laid back Mediterranean vibe of this cosmopolitan city.
