Itinerary

Tortilis is a timeless tented camp on the edge of Amboseli National Park overlooked by Mt Kilimanjaro and known for its large elephant families. Next, visit Elsa’s Kopje, an architectural marvel on a hill in Meru National Park, where George and Joy Adamson released their lioness Elsa before writing Born Free. Continue to Ol Pejeta, a game conservancy at the foot of Mt Kenya and home to East Africa’s most important rhino sanctuary and the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Here, guests have a unique opportunity to see the technicalities of a working conservancy. Finally, Elephant Pepper Camp is a traditional style tented camp in a prime but secluded game viewing area overlooking the magnificent Mara plains.
 

  • Day 1: Nairobi - Amboseli National Park

    Early morning transfer to Wilson Airport and depart from Nairobi to Amboseli on the morning scheduled Air Kenya flight. Flight departs Nairobi at 0730hrs and arrives into Amboseli at 0810hrs. Upon arrival, you’ll be met by a guide from camp and transferred to camp with a game drive en route. After lunch and a siesta, you depart on an afternoon game activity, either a game drive or a walking safari – returning to camp late afternoon. Overnight at Tortilis Camp (L,D)

    Tortilis Camp: Tortilis lies in unspoilt woodland on the edge of Amboseli National Park. The main lodge is open sided, where guests can relax and gaze out towards the soaring snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro – a great place for sundowners and enjoying delicious Italian food! Luxury thatch roofed tents are scattered among acacia and comprise of a stone veranda, elegant bathrooms, king size beds and many traditional decorations.

    Tortilis also provide interesting nature walks guided by local Masai. These are fascinating, as local traditions and medicinal/folk lore are heartily discussed. Within Amboseli, the elephants are very habituated to people (it is the site of the longest running elephant study in the world) and visitors may relax here, to observe the herds. There are also lion, a high concentration of hyena, Cape buffalo, waterbuck and serval among many others. With over four hundred bird species including flamingo, a variety of waders and one weaver particular to Amboseli, the birding is excellent.

  • Day 2: Amboseli National Park

  • Day 3: Amboseli National Park – Meru National Park

    After breakfast, you’ll catch the morning scheduled Air Kenya flight to Meru via Nairobi. Flight departs Amboseli at 0820hrs and arrives Meru at 1025. On arrival in Meru you’ll be met by a guide and transferred to camp. After lunch and time to relax, the remainder of the day will be spent on a shared game drive or walking safari or enjoying any of the other activities offered here.     Elsa's Kopje: Named for Elsa the orphaned lioness reared by George and Joy, this private hideaway is perched on top of Mugwongo Hill, the site of George Adamson's first camp. This park is renowned for its low rainfall, yet at the same time thirteen rivers and numerous streams run off the nearby mountains to provide an arid landscape laced with ribbons of green.

    From your cottage you will enjoy a 270-degree view of the surrounding park with its scattered kopjes and mysterious baobab trees. The open plan rooms are individually designed, incorporating the rocks into the structure. Traditional African-made furniture, bright ikat fabrics and whitewashed walls are simple yet superbly comfortable and stylishly effective. There is a swimming pool, game drives (day and night – note KWS activity charge for night game drives payable directly) are in open 4x4 vehicles and walks are accompanied by a knowledgeable naturalist. The food is of a very high standard and the service excellent.

  • Day 4:Meru National Park

  • Day 5: Meru National Park – Nanyuki

    After an early breakfast you’ll be transferred by camp vehicle to Ol Pejeta Bush Camp in Nanyuki. After lunch and time to relax, the remainder of the day will be spent on a game drive on shared basis or walking safari Overnight at Ol Pejeta Bush Camp (B,L,D)
     
    Ol Pejeta Bush Camp: A very comfortable yet traditional bush camp on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro river. Owner-managed by Alex and Diana Hunter, the camp is set in nearly100,000 acres in the Laikipia region of central Kenya, right on the Equator.

    This tented bush camp on the Ol Pejeta Conservancy will offer guests the opportunity for a unique kind of safari experience in Kenya. During your days with us, you will encounter behind-the-scenes of daily life on this working wildlife conservancy and cattle ranch. Guests are welcome to spend just one or two nights looking at some of these elements – or as long as they want – being as active, interactive, or as relaxed as they like when staying in camp.

  • Day 6: Nanyuki

    Early morning and afternoon game activities on shared basis. Overnight at Ol Pejeta Bush Camp (B,L,D)

  • Day 7: Nanyuki – Masai Mara Game Reserve

    Following breakfast, transfer to Nanyuki airstrip for your schedule Air Kenya flight to the Masai Mara. Flight departs Nanyuki at 0915hrs and arrives into Masai Mara at approx 1015hrs. On arrival at the airstrip you’ll be met by a guide from camp who will transfer you to camp with a shared game drive en route. After lunch there will be a shared game drive returning to camp as the sun sets. Overnight at Elephant Pepper Camp (B,L,D)

  • Day 8: Masai Mara Game Reserve

    Today will be spent on morning and afternoon game activities on shared basis Overnight at Elephant Pepper Camp (B,L,D)

    Elephant Pepper Camp: Elephant Pepper Camp is located in the middle of a 3600 sq km wilderness. It is situated within the protected Koiyaki wilderness area, away from other lodges. In order to preserve this special area the camp is seasonal and closes for two months of the year.

    Our spacious canvas tents are comfortably furnished, featuring en suite bathrooms with eco-friendly flush toilets and traditional safari showers. Nothing rivals sitting around the campfire enjoying the sounds of the African night. Extended game drives which continue into the evening make game viewing a complete experience. Elephant Pepper Camp brings people back to nature – no traffic, no permanent structures, just the sights and sounds of the African bush.

  • Day 9: Masai Mara Game Reserve - Nairobi

    Early morning shared game activity followed by breakfast and then board a scheduled flight back to Nairobi. Flight departs Masai Mara at 1015hrs and arrives into Nairobi at 1145hrs. On arrival at Nairobi Wilson Airport you will be transferred to your city centre hotel or to the International airport.
