This morning you will be transferred to the starting point for the days trek, about 20 kms from Munnar. Your guides will lead you from an altitude of 1500m gradually climbing to over 2600m, passing through sholas (high altitude rain forests) and grasslands which are typical to the higher areas of the Western Ghats. Along the way you may spot some of the wildlife of the area – elephants, sambar, sloth bear and the Nilgiri tahr. After ascending Meesapulimala - the second highest peak in the Western Ghats you'll stop for a rest at the peak to enjoy the panoramic views of the plains of the neighbouring state of Tamilnadu. You'll also be able to see the world’s highest tea estate, Kolukkumalai, before you begin your descent and continue trekking through grasslands and high altitude rainforest to your resort, where your evening will be at leisure. Begin your full day trek in Suryanelli. Perched atop the mountains here is the Papathy Shola, or butterfly forest, named for the spectacular annual migration of butterflies every October. The thick high altitude cloud forests here provide an ideal home not only for the butterflies but large numbers of birds & wildlife including Malabar Giant Squirrels. Your trek will descend to the Anaerangal Lake, whose name means 'The lake where the elephants come down', a magnet for herds of elephants that come here to graze and drink. (B) (L) (D)
Today your trek will take you through the Mathikettan Shola National Park. Within the park you'll find birds, butterflies and a variety of plants found nowhere else. Your destination is Santhanpara, set amidst luxuriant vegetation and spice growing hamlets, and along the way you'll pass large cardamom forests where cardamom, pepper & coffee are grown within the canopy of the forests and elephants are commonly seen. After an early breakfast begin your days cycling towards Vandanmedu, the cardamom capital of the world. The trail passes through the tea estates, dense forests where spices are grown and small spice growing villages. (B) (L) (D)
Today, your ride will take you around the Ramakalmedu area where the Western Ghats hover over the Tamilandu Plains. This area is famed for its tea gardens and spice plantations which make Kerala renowned as one of the spice capitals of the world, and you'll pass through forests and villages en route to Periyar Tiger Reserve. (B) (D)
Periyar Tiger Reserve is one of the best managed Wildlife Reserves in the country, with verdant forests extending over an area of 777 square kilometres set around a man-made lake. The open grasslands and varied topography supports a magnificent variety of animals - elephants, gaur (Indian bison), sambar deer, barking deer, mouse deer, Nilgiri langur, bonnet macaque, lion-tailed macaque, leopards, jungle cats, wild dogs and most importantly the tiger. Spend three days trekking and camping in the Periyar Tiger Reserve, with guides from the local community who are involved in the conservation of this national park. Each day you will trek approximately 20 - 35 kilometres before making camp for the evening.
See day six for more details.
You'll arrive back from your trek today at noon to freshen up before your onward departure.
