On this journey through Costa Rica, we discover rich nature and unique wildlife as we explore the towering volcanoes of Arenal and Poas, the lush rainforests of Monteverde and Manuel Antonio, and the thriving waterways of Tortuguero. The birdlife is a particular highlight and we hope to spot the rare and beautiful quetzal, as well as colourful toucans, hummingbirds, kingfishers and parrots.

Day 1

San Jose

Arrive San Jose and check-in to the hotel.

Day 2


Visit Doka Coffee Estate - the largest coffee plantation in Costa Rica. Here we’ll be given a guided tour around the coffee plantation, which will include coffee tasting and a visit to the roasting room. (B)

Day 3


This morning, if the Poas Volcano is still closed we will have a short visit to the old colonial capital of Cartago, before heading to the Irazu Volcano, where we’ll visit the main crater viewpoint. If the Poas Volcano is reopened, we will not visit Irazu but instead continue straight on from Cartago to the town of Turrialba (B)

Day 4

Day 5


Drive to Cano Blanco through extensive banana plantations. From Cano Blanco, a boat will take us to our spectacular lodge in the Tortuguero National Park, where we will spend the next two nights. (B)(L)(D)

Day 6


Today we have the opportunity to explore this spectacular national park. To kick off our day, there is the option of a bird watching trip by boat at dawn, where we have the opportunity to spot some of Costa Rica’s spectacular birdlife. Later in the morning we will go on a nature walk to understand more about the area’s unique ecosystem. This afternoon, we will take to the waterways for further exploration. (B)(L)(D)

Day 7


Leaving our lodge this morning, we travel by boat back to Cano Blanco. This afternoon, our drive skirts around the great central volcanic massif, passing through fertile farmlands, rich with tropical crops. Soon we catch sight of the famous Arenal Volcano. (B)(L)

Enjoy a day at leisure. (B)

Day 9


This morning we will explore the Arenal Volcano National Park, home to one of the most majestic volcanoes in Costa Rica. We will take a walk on the flanks of the volcano where your leader will point out interesting flora and fauna and provide more information about the science and history of the volcano. Continue your journey to Monteverde. (B)

Day 10


Spend the next two days exploring all that this area has to offer with a guided tour of the Monterverde Cloud forest, in search of wildlife and the rare resplendent quetzal. (B)

Day 11

Day 12


Leaving the cloud forest behind us, we descend to the Pacific Coast to Manuel Antonio National Park, where we will spend the next two nights. (B)

Day 13


Explore the Manuel Antonio National Park, famed for its beautiful beaches and rich wildlife. During our time in the park, we are likely to see white-faced capuchin monkeys, coatimundi (part of the racoon family) and the tiny squirrel monkeys. (B)

Day 14


After a morning relaxing on the beach, we leave the Pacific Ocean at about midday. Our journey back to Costa Rica’s capital will take about four hours.(B)
