Morocco

Morocco is an independent kingdom and is located at the Northwest of Africa. It is bordered in the North by the Strait of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea; to the south by Mauritania; to the east by Algeria and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.

The exotic city of Casablanca in Morocco often conjures up visions of the 1942 film, Casablanca. Starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, the film won three Oscars and went on to become a worldwide classic. Certainly this interesting city has proven to be a popular tourist destination, with many thousands of visitors each year.

The Boulevard de la Corniche, which some have called the French Riviera of the African continent, is an area along the Atlantic Ocean that is home to a number of exclusive up-market clubs that are enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. La Corniche stretches from the Mosque on a crescent through to the lighthouse standing on a rocky outcrop west of Casablanca.

There is certainly no shortage of great attractions in Morocco. The country enjoys a strong sense of culture and enjoys a long and ancient history. The cool blue water flowing over the sand of the beaches is a direct contrast with the hot white sands of the desert, while the greens of fertile valleys contrast with the browns and whites of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. The country is romantic and mysterious and there is little wonder that Morocco is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Africa.

The main starting points, of course, will be the more popular cities such as Marrakech, Tangier, Fes and Casablanca. At each of these places, you will find the usual hodgepodge mixture of medinas, bazaars and riads. You will also find superb beaches and classy hotels where a hubbly-bubbly pipes may be arranged with relative ease. All these things are an essential part of the Moroccan experience and should not be missed!

When to go:
On the northern coast the weather is good pretty much all year round. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors.

I've just returned from amazing Namibia. A highlight of this region are the Sossusvlei sand dunes.

These monumental dunes (the highest of which is 325m) were formed by multi directional winds blowing sand from the Kalahari Desert and the colours and forms are simply breathtaking.

Exhilarated we raced to the bottom of the dunes to a salt pan and back to our vehicle where we enjoyed a picnic breakfast, before heading back to our lodge for a relaxing afternoon.
