The tropical island of Sri Lanka, formerly know as Ceylon, is rich in history and tradition.

 

Old colonial powers have long since gone, but the Portuguese, Dutch and British influences still impact on the culture, religion, architecture and cuisine of this fascinating country. Picturesque beaches dot the coast, while majestic mountains, tea estates and rainforests cover the interior.

 

Colombo, situated 45 minutes from the airport is the bustling commercial, economic and cultural centre. It is a seaport and a unique mixture of the orient and the west. Comfortable hotels and high-rise blocks alternate with stately colonial buildings and quaint old buildings and souvenir shops, street markets and Buddhist and Hindu temples.

 

Colombo has a great selection of restaurants offering good value Sri Lankan cuisine. Mount Lavinia is a beachside suburb of Colombo and is an excellent choice for a beach and city holiday.
