Argentina & Uruguay

Gaucho cowboys, the tango, and the romance of Evita may characterise Argentina, but the country has so much more to offer. It is a country rich in contrasts that offers the visitor a wide variety of cultural attractions and an array of natural wonders including impressive mountain peaks, rare geological formations, pampean plains, tropical jungles and the largest variety of fauna in the world.

From the northern deserts to the roaring Iguazu Falls and the superb isolation of Patagonia, Argentina is a country of diverse and dramatic landscapes.

Uruguay is a small country nestled between Argentina and Brazil. It is easily reached by air or high speed hydrofoil from Buenos Aires and is an intriguing country with a mix of spectacular beaches, fertile ranchlands and colonial architecture.

Montevideo is the only large city in Uruguay and is a picturesque blend of traditional and European architecture. The Cuidad Vieja, the Old Town, is home to many interesting museums. Colonia de Sacramento is a remarkable historic town, still retaining its original ancient walls and drawbridge.

Many of the 18th century buildings have been resorted and coverted to museums and strolling through the old lamp lit streets of the Old Town in the evening can be a magical experience.

When to go:

Buenos Aires is great all year round.  Patagonia destinations are best in summer and Iguazu is best in the southern winter or spring, when heat and humidity are less oppressive.   Skiers enjoy and Andes from June to September.

Staff Experience

Jane, Machu Picchu
The experience that I had at Machu Picchu was something that is hard to put into words...

I personally recommend taking the 4 hour train ride from Cuzco to Aguas Calientes and staying overnight to make the most from your time in Machu Picchu. The train ride is very scenic and comfortable and you can relax knowing you don’t have to rush your visit.

The following morning from Aguas Calientes you take a bus up to the ruins. It’s best to go early when there are fewer tourists. The ride is 30 minutes and follows a zig-zag path to the top of a steep cliff and from here it is a short walk to beautiful vistas and unbelievable ancient construction work.

An early morning visit allows you to view this spectacular site only interrupted by the waking birds and the grazing llamas eating their breakfast of grass grown in ancient soil!
