China

China is the third largest country in the world after Russia and Canada and is known as the cradle of civilisation.  Some of the highlights in China include Beijing which is full of Imperial wonders, predominantly from the Ming & Qing periods.  Xian with the 2000 year old Qin marvels of the Terracotta Warriors, and its old quarter completely surrounded by the original city walls.

Guilin, one of the most scenic regions of the world where you can relax on a leisurely cruise down the Li River with its limestone hills and cormorant fishermen. The resplendent architecture in Shanghai highlights the grand colonial days of China in the 19th Century and not to mention the Yangtze River famed for its three Gorges and medieval riverside villages. China has never been more accessible for both the group and the individual traveller.

When to go:

Spring (Mar-Apr) and Autumn (Sep-Oct) are the best months with pleasant weather (20-30°C) and fewer crowds. Summer can be unbearably hot and stuffy, and winters are harsh with below freezing temperatures.

Great Wall
To walk the Great Wall of China has always been a dream and to finally climb steps with over 2000 years of history is quite overwhelming. Built to protect the Chinese Empire from invaders - particularly the Mongolians, it also safeguarded the Silk Road trading route and contributed to the nations economic and cultural development.

Badaling, located 70km from Beijing, is where you can view the best preserved sections of the wall and even though it was steep in parts, I had great satisfaction when I reached the end of the restored section of the wall.
The quiet and uninterrupted scenery of rolling hills dotted with sections of the wall is something I will always remember.

But don’t forget to explore Beijing’s other treasures - Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven as well as Wangfujing Street for shopping and local food treats.
